Intellectual Freedom Stories: From a Shifting Landscape
Now Available
American Library Association has recently released Intellectual Freedom Stories from a Shifting Landscape. The book is a collection of stories from and about librarians who have experienced challenges to library material. Librarians also share stories of how they have worked to champion intellectual freedom through protest and discussion groups. Stories range from finding hidden graphic films in a library's storage closet to public protests to drag queen story time. Librarians share their stories about book defacements and public programming gone awry. Current topics such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter are addressed in these personal essays.
The book includes stories twenty-one contributors who share their experiences in a wide range of professional experiences. The eighteen essays in the published book come from a library association; public, school, and academic libraries; and a prison library system. Two stories come to the project from international librarians.
